Dr. Vipul Mankad

Dr. Vipul Mankad, having recently relinquished his leadership roles in healthcare organizations, presides over his non-profit, family foundation to support education and health worldwide. He has a distinguished career combining academic physician leadership, vision and expertise to build successful health systems, clinical research, and medical education around the world. He has served in health policy roles in the US Senate as well as the Executive Branch of the USA.

Dr. Mankad graduated from Medical College, Vadodara, and migrated to the United States in 1968. After receiving training at the New York University and Cornell Medical Centers, he began his career as a scientist, professor, and physician leader with the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, where he garnered national and international acclaim for his work on children with blood diseases and cancer. He worked tirelessly to secure competitive grants of $ 16 million ($ 65 million in 2023- inflation-adjusted dollars for direct costs) from the National Institutes of Health to build one of 10 Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers in the US.

Dr. Mankad then served as Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky and in addition, served as the Chief Clinical Officer for the University Physicians. During his tenure, he led a group practice of 480 physicians and 15 clinical departments, which was benchmarked as an industry-leading best practices model. He founded and led the Kentucky Children’s Hospital in addition to expanding research and education.

After 11 years as Professor and Pediatric Department Chairman and multiple other roles at the University of Kentucky, Doctor Mankad obtained a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant to fund his two-year sabbatical in the Institute of Medicine, the US Senate, and CMS (providing oversight over Medicare and Medicaid programs). Dr. Mankad worked on national and global health policy issues, cost structures, and quality of care delivery.

He is widely published with a bibliography that includes more than 150 scientific publications including 3 books. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer and editor for numerous medical and scientific journals. Dr. Mankad has also served as a consultant, lecturer, and visiting professor to numerous hospitals and medical schools across the US, India, Japan, Latin America, and the Middle East. He has also been the chairman and member of numerous government review panels for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). He writes about his Indian heritage and was featured as a prominent Asian American at the Houston Public Library in the summer of 2023.
